Financial Aid - Dependent Verification Form KB0026267

Introduction:

NOTE: In order for the parent to see the Verification form they need to login into their NetID's financial center not guest access into their students account.

To receive financial aid, students must submit tax information through My Financial Center. Many students are considered dependents and must therefore submit their parents tax information for processing their application. The dependent verification form allows a parent to confirm that the tax information submitted by the student is correct before the final submission.

During the process of submitting the Dependent Verification Form students or parents may have problems that stop them from submitting the form. The following KB will give the steps to successfully submit the form and the support for any problems that may occur.

Students:

Students must submit tax information and then verify the information in My Financial Center. There will be a link for tax information found under the "To Do" section in the upper right-hand corner of My Financial Center. To verify, the students will need to enter initials for an electronic signature.

Parents:

After the student has submitted and verified the tax information, the parent needs to enter their student's My Financial Center (in the parent's account. If using the same computer, the student must have logged out) and click on Parent Validation of Student Verification in the To Do section.

NOTE: This verification step will only appear if the parent's account has a Social Security Number matching the one the student entered on their FAFSA form. If the parent's BYU account does not have a SSN on file, they can add it by contacting the Records and Registration Office at 801-422-2631.

  1. This will direct them to a page that will have listed all the dependents that require verification.

  2. After selecting the student the parent will be taken to the tax form where they can sign electronically at the bottom of the page to verify the information. This step is where most problems occur.

If the following error appears it is because the parent's account and the student's account have not yet synced information.

Ensure that you are navigating to the correct locations and are completing all the steps of the process. If everything is correct and there is still a problem find exactly where in the process the problem is occurring. If there is an error at any point ask for a screenshot.
