Learning Suite - Set Up Syllabus KB0026840

Once a professor has set up a course, they can select the Syllabus tab and will see the Syllabus Setup menu.

Use BYU Learning Suite Syllabus:

This option allows you to create a syllabus that automatically synchronizes with other areas of BYU Learning Suite. For example, assignments created using BYU Assignments are automatically included in the syllabus. Other information, such as university policies, is automatically included in the syllabus. The rest of your syllabus must be entered manually. This is a good option for professors who would like to use the same syllabus and reproduce it semester after semester.

Materials:

Textbooks, packets, and optional materials can no longer be added into Learning Suite syllabi directly, but must be listed for a class through the BYU Store's website (booklist.byu.edu). This change was made to ensure that the correct book(s) is(are) listed with the right image associated. Faculty can edit their book lists at any time through booklist.byu.edu. We have been made aware that the caches in Learning Suite last for about 3 days, so if it has been updated on booklist.byu.edu, wait a few days for the materials to appear.

Once they select Save and Continue on this option, the side menu will show all the parts of the syllabus that can be created and included. Some of these options are or have material which is automatically filled and included in the syllabus, such as assignments or required university policies. Other options under these side menus are optional and are only shown if filled out and included by the instructor, such as materials for the course or policies about academic honesty (Selecting these options will generate a sub-tab under their corresponding section of the syllabus).

Another notable side-tab is the Distribute side-tab. There are three main options here: Link allows anyone with that link access to a viewable page of the syllabus you've created in learning suite; Word Export will initiate a download of the syllabus as a word document (.docx file) (It is important to note that there is not option to choose what parts of the syllabus are included in this export); the Print feature does allow you to select which  parts of the syllabus are included.

Upload a Syllabus:

This option allows you to upload a syllabus created in another program such as Microsoft Word. Students can download the syllabus when they click on the Syllabus tab. This method does not synchronize the syllabus with other components of BYU Learning Suite. For example, if you create an assignment in BYU Grades it will not appear in the syllabus. Additionally, you will not be able to edit an uploaded syllabus within Learning Suite.

Link to another website:

This option allows you to create a link to a syllabus on a website outside of BYU Learning Suite. Students will be redirected to the website when they click on the Syllabus tab. This method will not synchronize the syllabus with other components of Learning Suite. For example, if you create a test in Exams it will not appear in the syllabus.

Do Not Include a Syllabus:

Select this option if you do not want to include an online syllabus in your course. Syllabus will not appear in the tab options when students log into the course. This may confuse students because they cannot easily locate a course syllabus.

Syllabus Link Redirects to Learning Suite Home Page:

If the green link appears to download the syllabus, but when it is clicked the page is redirected to the BYU Learning Suite homepage then there was no error on Learning Suite, but that is just the response when the professor has selected to upload their syllabus, but has not attached the file yet.
